The Lost Art of Thinking

“Direct your thoughts, control your emotions, and ordain your destiny.” – Napoleon Hill

Never before in history has the average person had access to so much information. You are often just a few clicks away from the answer to almost any question you may have. We do not even have to be in one location to access information because of the wonder of the smart phone. And yet, people know less and think less for themselves than before. We have become intellectually lazy and believe what we are told rather than find things out for ourselves. There is a lot of information out there, but very little knowledge.

I will not go into the reasons for this problem, let us just say, the fault must fall on the individual. We have become lazy, uncaring and too preoccupied with playing games rather than finding truth. I think of a great question that I heard from the deep thinker, Winnie-the-pooh. Pooh once asked his dear friend piglet, “Did you ever stop to think and forget to start again?” That is what has happened to many people. They have stopped and forgot to start again.

Success-minded people are people who think. They do not limit their thoughts to popular opinion or the realm of what is possible but rather are willing to stand alone and think of the impossible. William Arthur Ward, one of America’s most quoted authors, said, “Nothing limits achievement like small thinking; nothing expands possibilities like unleashed thinking.” There are really no limits to what can be done and achieved by those who are willing to think.
